A Little History

The dental practice in Russell Street, Armagh, was established in January 1926. It was originally set up in Melbourne Terrace, now 16 Russell Street, and soon moved to 3 Melbourne Terrace now 14 Russell Street. It is now based in 2 Melbourne Terrace, now 12 Russell Street, jointly with 14 Russell Street.

Melbourne Terrace was built in 1839. Originally, the practice was a joint medical and dental affair with two class-mates sharing a waiting room. They were Dr. John Woods from Keady and Ned FitzGerald from Tralee. However, the arrangement did not last very long as Ned FitzGerald married Cis Hourihane, who had been in dental practice in Bandon, Co. Cork, and they moved next door to 3 Melbourne Terrace where they lived for many years, bringing up a family of four boys in the house above the surgery and waiting room.

Dr. Woods meanwhile moved across the Mall to Beresford Row, where he established a medical practice which lasted for many years. The dental practice was carried on by the FitzGeralds. In the mid-thirties Ned took a position as part-time school dentist, which involved bringing a dental caravan around the south Armagh schools. His wife then filled in, back in Russell Street so that the five-and-a-half day practice was able to carry on with husband and wife working together, although there was still only one surgery.

Ned died suddenly in 1953, so Cis carried on the practice alone for many years. Des, the only one of the family to follow in dental footsteps, joined his mother in 1956 and a second surgery was brought into use. She died in 1970 and Des ran the practice for several years with the help of assistants. One of these, Philip Murphy, joined the practice and the family when he married Deirdre, Des's eldest daughter.

Des retired early 1988 and the practice was expanded greatly when Philip took over 12 Russell Street, next door, and built it up to its six surgeries. The original waiting room and the original surgery remain in 14, while the houses are now connected.
